Coconut Fiber, or Coir, as it is known, is extracted from the husk of the coconut and is used in making products from car parts and floor mats, to mulch for Orchid seedlings and pet bedding.

Sustainable Material: Coconut Fiber Coir Mattresses - Dream Mattress Organics

In a time when coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk and so on are in such demand deciding to use the whole coconut ensures a more sustainable harvest. After all, Coir is made from the discarded husks of the coconut! Let us put the numbers in perspective:

  • The average lifespan of a mature coconut tree is 100 years and that tree will produce for 75 years.
  • Most trees yield 50 coconuts per season. In the Kerala district of India alone, the coconut crop averages 5 billion.
  • The weight of a coconut is 1-3 lbs. Imagine 5 to 15 billion lbs. of coconut husks just taking up space in just that part of India.
  • Worldwide, the numbers would be staggering.

As a second use product with so many possibilities, coconuts and the Coir process are gifts to the planet. Not only is it an eco-responsible method of harvest

ing coconut by reducing waste but on a practical side this fiber has moisture and dust control as main features without the use of toxic chemicals, and provides all natural 99% germ-resistance.

One product you wouldn’t even dream could be made from coconuts is… your mattress! Some of our top of the line organic mattresses make use of this wonderful nut to make mattresses that are performance greatness and earth goodness. Coconut husks are processed by using water as the only additional agent. The already processed fibers are then woven into a rope that gets flattened into layers. Those layers are then coated with organic latex which makes the mattress water-repellent and germ-resistant. This process makes the need for metal springs obsolete. The rubberized Coir mattress is naturally flexible and provides strong support for the body. It follows the natural lines of each person's individual form.

Coir also generates 88.6% Far infrared radiation. As can be seen on our website, "No germs can survive and the self-contained far-infrared radiation in the mattress. It provides many health benefits and better sleep. Far infrared ray is natural; the sun, humans and animals produce this energy. For decades FIR (far infrared ray) therapy has been used by physicians mainly in Europe and Asia."
